photos:minnesota:2001-07-30 free dmitry protest

I left work a little early this Monday afternoon to participate in a protest outside the courthouse in downtown Minneapolis calling for the release of Dmitry Sklyarov and the repeal of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The Dmitry situation is ridiculous. See www.freesklyarov.org for details and www.anti-dmca.org for general information on how the DMCA effects you.

In any case, about 35 people gathered with signs and fliers. I brought a supply of foam-board, a really gigantic Marks-A-Lot marker, 130 double-sided fliers, and as much lemon-aid, Cherry Coke and Squirt as would fit in my cooler. I surrendered my sign material to those with catchy phrases in mind and opted to hand out fliers and talk to people.

I think the time was very profitable. There were a lot of pedestrians walking back to their cars. Maybe one in five would completely ignore me. The rest at least accepted a flier and read at least part of it as they continued down the street. I had one to two minute conversation with a number of people while they waited for a stop light. And five or six actually stopped to talk for a good five to ten minutes.

Here are the photos I took from the event.
